Thinking Through Art

Creative drawing responses to interesting directives—that's what we're after here. Students get to draw things they've never thought about drawing before.

In almost all of these activities, just a pencil is required. Why? Because most elementary students are more interested in ideas than in "fine art." Crayons and paints are good in many cases but they can inhibit the free flow of ideas.

In one activity entitled Silly Sentences, children are asked to make drawings based on some very—yes, very—silly sentences. So they must draw something that expresses "His smile fell to the ground," or "The kite flew the boy." There are interesting design assignments, too.

Note: The activities included here were part of our "Smart Art" Enrichment Packet/Level 1. For simplicity, all of our Enrichment Packets are now called "Thinkables." The material itself has not changed.
